Faded Dreams (1994)
Sequels being what they were, after several years of enormous success with the Travelers Guide, I was urged to write another ghost towns book.
This one was scheduled to be the last. I was writing ghost town books now for twenty years. I was eager to tackle new subjects and ideas. However, I compiled a list of 100 ghost towns, about half drawn from old material from the original Ghost Towns of Kansas series, and half completely new material. The new book took about a year to write, but after one major edit, it was published. The new book, Faded Dreams, became another success.
Faded Dreams was released on April 15, 1994, to almost no promotion or hoopla. I did not actively promote the book as I had the others. I was involved in numerous other projects at the time, and there seemed to be no extra time to push for sales as I had the other volumes. The reviews were great, and many have felt that my writing was the best overall with this book. It has also been a consistent seller, though nothing like the Travelers Guide.
While I wrote a much lengthier definition of a ghost town for this book, another town took exception. Paradise, in Russell County, was quick to point out that they were not a ghost town. I begged to differ. The negative press did not last long, and hopefully they benefitted from the stray tourist who came to town.
